Advent Tree – During the season of Advent, Westwood participates in the Advent Tree: A Ray of Hope---a ministry to homeless and low-income families in our community. Local agencies such as the Franconia Family Resource Center, FACETS (a Christian organization addressing homelessness), and local elementary schools have been served through the Advent Tree ministry. This ministry brings a “Ray of Hope” to several hundred children and their families during the Christmas season.
Adopt-A-People/Partners in Mission (CBF): Westwood has chosen the Persian Speakers Worldwide to partner with in global missions through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Mich and Pat T. are the CBF missionaries to Persian Speakers and are church planters at the Afghan and Iranian Christian Fellowship in Virginia, in addition to NJ, DE, and PA areas. Adopt-a-Highway – Volunteers clean up “our” section of Old Keene Mill Road (from Hunter Village Drive to Rolling Road) several times a year in order to be good stewards of our environment and good neighbors. We were officially recognized by VDOT for our long-time participation in this program.
Baptist World Alliance - Westwood is affiliated with BWA and, through them, support Baptist ministries around the world. We collect special offerings twice annually for BWA missions.
Children and Missions – Preschool and Elementary children are involved in year-round mission projects at the church and in the local community. On Wednesday evenings at CFN, children hear mission stories and participate in hands-on projects that reach out to persons in need in our community.
Crestwood Elementary School Mentor Program - For the past eight years, Westwood members have tutored students at various Elementary schools on a weekly basis and have provided much needed school supplies and backpacks. Most recently, a partnership with Crestwood Elementary School offers Mentors for children with language, reading, math, and learning difficulties. In addition, Westwood assists local schools by providing monetary assistance for after-school snacks.
Community Blood Drives and Health Fairs - Westwood, in cooperation with INOVA Health Systems, hosts periodic community blood drives and “Back-to-School” Health Fairs For the Uninsured for the surrounding community.
Community use of our facilities – We are very intentional about allowing community non-profit organizations have use of Westwood’s facilities. Groups such as language congregations, Overeaters Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Food Addicts, and Boy and Girl Scout troops are just few who use the church during the year.
Day Camp – Every summer, Westwood has provided an outreach and feeding program for children in low-income apartments. Persons of all ages at Westwood assist in this mission effort. The date for each year’s event is usually the second week in July and is a joint VBS/Day Camp program at the church.
Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO) – Westwood participates with other churches in the Springfield/Burke area in a cooperative ministry by donating food and clothing as well as assisting with transportation. Seasonal Food Baskets during Thanksgiving and Christmas are also provided by Westwood members and Sunday School classes to meet the needs of individuals and families in our community. The month of June is Westwood’s month for the ECHO Food Drive.
ESL (English Classes for Internationals) – Westwood began an English as a Second Language (ESL) ministry over 10 years ago. Currently, we provide two Sunday morning Bible classes for interested ESL students.
Hypothermia Prevention Response Program works with other faith communities, FACETS, and Fairfax County to offer food and shelter to homeless men and women during the winter months. Help is needed with shopping, cooking, transporting and serving meals, or by organizing drives for hygiene items, gift cards to restaurants, hats, gloves, and other necessary items.
Medical Assistance Program – This outreach program assists families who visit the Springfield Franconia Resource Center’s Clinic in need of medical assistance and needed medicines. The monies allotted for this ministry provide a “safety net” to help prevent children/parents from being turned away in their most vulnerable time of need.
Men on Mission (M2) is open to the men of Westwood Baptist Church (members and friends) who are interested in exploring the Role of the Christian Man in today's culture. M2 activities focus on three areas: Spiritual Life Enrichment, Ministries, and Fellowship.
Mission Teams & Disaster Relief – Westwood has a long tradition of sending mission teams to less fortunate areas of the United States to work on projects to assist people living there. Teams were sent to the Gulf Coast to aid in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. In addition, we assist people groups in places that are closed by sending financial and humanitarian aid, as well as letter writing and advocacy for those persecuted or imprisoned. Westwood also collects special offerings to aid disaster relief efforts around the globe. For example: Tsunami 2004, Hurricane Katrina 2005, Myanmar cyclone 2008, China earthquake 2008.
Operation Christmas Child – During the Fall, Sunday School classes and persons of all ages are involved in the Samaritan’s Purse’s project of filling over 100 shoe boxes full of toys and health items for children all over the world.
Springfield Gardens Ministries serves predominately low-income Latino/Hispanic families through Community Partner events, Vacation Bible School, School Supplies and Backpack drives, the Advent Tree, book drives, food and medical assistance, and various ministry opportunities throughout the year.
Westwood Food Pantry creates awareness of the needs of individuals and families in our community; maintains/stocks food pantry; distributes groceries and gift cards to persons who come to Westwood in need; and suggests new ways to reach out and minister to persons in our community. The Food Pantry collects goods on the first Sunday of every month, but we welcome your donations anytime!
Women on Mission (WOM) – This dynamic group of women does many different hands-on activities to serve the community such as providing special mission speakers; layette kits for newborns of needy families at Fairfax Hospital; making sandwiches for the homeless in our community; sending prayer packages with cookies to college students; making “cooling collars” for those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan; hosting a World Crafts Bazaar to aid poverty-stricken artisans from around the world; aiding local schools and ministry programs to low-income families---just to name a few.
World Mission Support – We are affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and, through them, support missionaries across the world. Westwood collects special offerings twice annually for Global Missions. We also directly support two members who live in Japan in their ministry amongst the Japanese.
Youth Missions – Throughout the year, Westwood youth are involved in numerous mission and outreach projects in our community and in the D.C. area. Each summer finds Westwood’s youth involved in Impact Virginia in June, serving in Vacation Bible School in July, Mission trips to PWO, and assisting in the Community Involvement ministries throughout the year.
